Built for the fight. At home in Tampa Bay.
A walk-on mentality. A first-overall-pick résumé. A quarterback willing to scramble, absorb a hit and come back for the next snap. Baker Mayfield brought his own brand of competitive fire to the Buccaneers—and gave the Krewe a new No. 6 to rally behind.
Mayfield arrived in 2023 after a turbulent stretch that took him from Cleveland to Carolina and then Los Angeles. In Tampa Bay, he won the starting job, helped secure an NFC South title and delivered a playoff victory in his first season. A second division championship followed in 2024, alongside a career-best 41 touchdown passes. 2023 season history • 2024 season history.
Through his first three completed Buccaneers seasons, Mayfield produced 12,237 passing yards and 95 touchdown passes. His career remains a work in progress, with another chapter unfolding in 2026. The current-season figures below include games played through November 1, 2026. Official career statistics.

2023 A fresh start. A division title.
Mayfield signed with Tampa Bay in March and won the starting competition with Kyle Trask. Working with offensive coordinator Dave Canales, he threw for 4,044 yards and 28 touchdowns as the Buccaneers rallied late in the season to finish 9–8 and win the NFC South.
A perfect 158.3 passer rating at Green Bay was a December highlight. January brought a 32–9 playoff win over Philadelphia before Tampa Bay’s season ended in Detroit, 31–23. 2023 review.
2024 The 41-touchdown encore.
After signing a new three-year contract in March, Mayfield set career highs with 4,500 passing yards and 41 touchdown passes. His 71.4% completion rate and 106.8 passer rating established Buccaneers season records.
Tampa Bay finished 10–7 and claimed another division crown. The postseason ended with a 23–20 wild-card loss to Washington, while Mayfield earned a second consecutive Pro Bowl selection. 2024 review • Contract announcement.
2025 A strong start, a difficult finish.
The Buccaneers reached their bye at 6–2, but injuries and a second-half slide left them 8–9 and outside the playoffs. Mayfield finished with 3,693 passing yards, 26 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
He also contributed a career-high 382 rushing yards. The season showed both his willingness to extend plays and how difficult the margin for error had become for a depleted Tampa Bay offense. 2025 review • Player biography.
2026: back in the huddle
A dislocated right thumb against Minnesota in Week Three interrupted Mayfield’s run of starts. He missed the next three games and returned at Carolina in Week Seven. Through Week Eight, his passing line stands at 68 completions on 110 attempts for 679 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions.
The November 1 win over Atlanta was unusual: Mayfield attempted only three passes and completed none in the rain-soaked 16–0 victory. Sources: injury report, return-to-lineup update and Week 8 recap.

In his first postseason game for Tampa Bay, Mayfield threw touchdown passes to David Moore, Trey Palmer and Chris Godwin. Moore’s 44-yard score and Palmer’s 56-yard touchdown helped turn short opportunities into major damage.
The defense supplied its own statement, including a safety, while the Eagles failed to convert a third down. For Mayfield and the Buccaneers, the result extended a season that had already exceeded many preseason expectations.

From walk-on to first overall
The road that brought Baker to the Bay
Texas roots & an Oklahoma Heisman
Mayfield grew up in the Austin area and played at Lake Travis High School. He walked on at Texas Tech in 2013, won the starting quarterback job and later transferred to Oklahoma. After sitting out the 2014 season, he started for the Sooners from 2015 through 2017.
His Heisman finishes climbed from fourth to third to first. On December 9, 2017, Mayfield became Oklahoma’s sixth Heisman Trophy winner and the first winner to have begun his college career as a walk-on since athletic scholarships were introduced in the 1950s. His rise made persistence a central part of his story long before his NFL career began.

Cleveland: a No. 1 pick and a playoff breakthrough
The Browns selected Mayfield first overall in the 2018 NFL Draft. He threw 27 touchdown passes as a rookie, establishing the NFL rookie record at the time, and received the Pro Football Writers of America’s Rookie of the Year award.
His biggest team breakthrough came after the 2020 season. Cleveland beat Pittsburgh 48–37 in the wild-card round on January 10, 2021, its first playoff victory since the 1994 season. Mayfield threw three touchdown passes in that win.

2022: three cities, one unforgettable Thursday
Cleveland traded Mayfield to Carolina in July 2022. After the Panthers waived him in December, the Rams claimed him on December 6. Two days later, he came off the bench against Las Vegas and led a 98-yard winning drive, capped by a touchdown pass to Van Jefferson, in a 17–16 victory.
That night did not erase a difficult season, but it supplied a memorable reminder of his ability to respond when an opportunity arrived. Rams game recap • Carolina trade announcement.
Through November 1, 2026 • Career still active
