Rueben Bain Jr.’s route to Tampa Bay stayed close to his Florida football roots: Miami Central, the Miami Hurricanes, then a Buccaneers jersey. The player nicknamed “Hurricane” arrived as the fifteenth pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, bringing the power and persistent effort that had caught Tampa Bay’s attention. The Buccaneers’ draft-night assessment.
For the Krewe, a rookie season offers the pleasure of watching those college strengths meet new tests. A promising rush becomes a lesson, a lesson becomes another opportunity, and eventually a familiar number appears beneath a milestone: No. 3, first NFL sack.
Miami Central → Miami Hurricanes → Tampa Bay
Three stages of a Florida football story
Miami Central Winning became familiar.
Bain helped Miami Central win four consecutive Florida state championships. His high school career included 77 sacks and the 2022 Nat Moore Trophy, presented to South Florida’s top high school football player. Those accomplishments made him a name to know before he played a college down. Official personal biography.
2023–2025 Representing his hometown university.
Miami was a longtime favorite, and staying home carried meaning for Bain. He wanted younger South Florida players to see what was possible. Across three seasons with the Hurricanes, he progressed from a freshman making an immediate impression to a central figure in a national championship-game run. Miami’s personal feature; his college-to-NFL record.
2026 A first-round opportunity in Tampa.
Tampa Bay selected him on April 23 and signed him on May 7 to a four-year rookie contract with a fifth-year team option. General manager Jason Licht had been pleasantly surprised to find Bain available at No. 15. The Bucs saw a chance to strengthen their edge rush. Draft and signing dates; contract announcement; Licht’s assessment.

First NFL sack: Aaron Rodgers goes down
A rookie milestone

NFL SACK
Aaron Rodgers
Eight yards behind the line.
BUCCANEERS 19 • STEELERS 26
Overtime • A personal first in a team defeat
Bain recorded his first NFL sack against Pittsburgh, bringing down Aaron Rodgers for an eight-yard loss. Tampa Bay lost 26–19 in overtime, but the afternoon supplied a clear marker in the rookie’s development. The club’s next-day review identified the sack as his first, and its highlight preserves the play. Official game takeaways; watch the sack.
His complete Week 6 line included four combined tackles and one pass defensed. For fans tracking his progress, it was an afternoon with contributions in more than one column. Those numbers remain part of a young NFL record that is still being written. Official game log.
Learning the whole defense
The preparation behind the power
A film-room impression on Larry Foote
At the combine, Bain impressed Buccaneers coach Larry Foote by explaining responsibilities beyond his own position. He could discuss what inside defenders and coverage players were doing on the film. Foote also praised his focus during rookie minicamp. For a young edge defender, that understanding matters: the rush must work within the defense around it. The Buccaneers’ football-IQ feature.
The same account describes his forceful hand use and ability to win through power. It gives fans something to watch between the headline plays: how he approaches contact, handles his assignment and keeps working through a rep.
Lessons from Jason Taylor
At Miami, Bain worked with defensive line coach and Pro Football Hall of Famer Jason Taylor. Taylor described a friendly personality away from competition and a much more intense player once the football work began. That combination is part of the appeal: someone comfortable with people who takes the demands of his position seriously. Miami’s account of their work together.

The person behind No. 3
Some familiar Buccaneers connections
Bain’s cousin Carlton Davis III was drafted by Tampa Bay and played for the Buccaneers, giving him an existing family connection to the club. In his rookie Q&A, Bain also identified Calijah Kancey as someone on the team he already knew well. Get to know the rookie.
Two lighter details from that conversation: he enjoys Ghost of Tsushima, and his favorite superhero is the Hulk from the 2008 film. Football supplies the public stage; these answers add a little everyday personality.
A degree with a different kind of focus
Bain graduated at Miami’s December 11, 2025 fall commencement. His undergraduate degree was in studio art photography. Alongside the football honors and playoff preparation, he had completed an academic goal with a creative subject at its center. Commencement announcement; Miami’s confirmation of his degree.
Bringing Christmas gifts to Brownsville
In December 2025, the Hurricane Bain Foundation held its inaugural Christmas toy drive at the Dr. Dorothy Bendross-Mindingall Social-Economic Institute in Miami’s Brownsville neighborhood. Bain helped distribute bicycles, toys, games and snacks, took photographs with families and signed autographs. Miami also reported a donation to his former elementary school earlier that month. These were practical ways to give back to the community he had represented on the field. Miami’s account of the event.
The rookie chapter continues
Keep an eye on the edge
Bain has given Buccaneers fans an early milestone to remember and a longer story to follow. Watch the hands, the effort after contact and the way his rush fits with the defenders beside him. The college accomplishments brought him here; the next pages of No. 3’s football record belong to Tampa Bay.
