WEEK 3 RECAP: A PUNT-RETURN TOUCHDOWN, COSTLY PENALTIES AND A LATE MAYFIELD INJURY LEAVE TAMPA BAY WITH A THIRD STRAIGHT LOSS.

Tampa Bay fell to the Minnesota Vikings 23-16 at Raymond James Stadium on Sunday, September 27, leaving the Buccaneers 0-3 after three weeks of the 2026 season. Minnesota never trailed, but the Bucs drew within one point in the fourth quarter before two Will Reichard field goals supplied the final margin. Baker Mayfield injured his throwing hand on a late interception, and rookie Jalon Daniels handled Tampa Bay's final possession.

The Buccaneers finished with a 243-230 advantage in net offense, but neither team consistently moved the chains. Tampa Bay converted two of 17 third downs and Minnesota converted two of 15, producing a combined 17 punts. The Bucs committed eight accepted penalties for 81 yards, with several flags wiping out gains and one erasing a touchdown. Minnesota's defense added six sacks and two interceptions, while its special teams delivered the game's longest scoring play.

Minnesota opened with a seven-play, 40-yard possession that featured two Justin Jefferson catches and ended in Reichard's 54-yard field goal at 10:20 of the first quarter. Tampa Bay's first series ended after three plays. Myles Price fielded Riley Dixon's punt at the Vikings' 14 and returned it 86 yards for a touchdown. Reichard's extra point made the score 10-0 with 8:43 remaining, before the Buccaneers had earned their first first down.

Tampa Bay answered immediately with a five-play, 80-yard touchdown drive. Cade Otton's 14-yard catch and two Bucky Irving runs moved the offense forward, and a facemask penalty on Dallas Turner advanced the ball to the Minnesota 40. Mayfield then connected with Ted Hurst III for a 40-yard touchdown. Chase McLaughlin's extra point brought the Bucs within three at 10-7 with 6:44 left in the first quarter.

The Buccaneers tied the game midway through the second quarter but missed an opportunity to take the lead. David Walker's nine-yard sack helped force a Minnesota punt, and Tampa Bay began at its own 48. Otton's 37-yard catch on third-and-two put the ball at the Vikings' seven. Consecutive holding penalties on Cody Mauch and Graham Barton pushed the offense back to the 27, and the drive ultimately ended in McLaughlin's 28-yard field goal at 5:33.

Minnesota took only 1:22 to respond. Kyler Murray found Jordan Addison for a 30-yard gain on the first play of the drive, and Tampa Bay's challenge of the completion was unsuccessful. Three plays later, Murray hit Addison for a 41-yard touchdown on third-and-eight. The four-play, 73-yard possession restored the Vikings' lead to 17-10 with 4:11 left in the half. That score held through the break.

Tampa Bay's defense supplied its best scoring opportunity of the third quarter. Vita Vea tipped a Murray pass intended for Addison, and A'Shawn Robinson intercepted it at the Minnesota 22. The Buccaneers gained only two net yards on the resulting possession: Irving ran for three, Mayfield threw incomplete, and Eric Wilson recorded a one-yard sack. McLaughlin's 38-yard field goal cut the deficit to 17-13 with 7:12 left.

The next Tampa Bay possession captured the offense's frustration. A chop-block penalty erased an Irving reception that would have gained 15 yards. Facing third-and-29 from his own 15, Mayfield then found Chris Godwin Jr. for what appeared to be an 85-yard touchdown. A holding penalty on Luke Goedeke nullified the score and left the Bucs facing third-and-36 at their own eight. Tampa Bay eventually punted, and Minnesota carried its four-point lead into the final quarter.

McLaughlin narrowed the margin again with a 54-yard field goal at 9:02 of the fourth quarter. Emeka Egbuka's 21-yard reception had opened that drive, and a Minnesota personal foul later helped Tampa Bay recover from another holding penalty and a sack. The 17-16 score kept the outcome in reach, but the Vikings answered with a possession lasting 5:52. Aaron Jones Sr. converted fourth-and-one, and Reichard finished the drive with a 56-yard field goal at 3:10 to make it 20-16.

Mayfield's final possession began with a 13-yard completion to Kenny Gainwell but stalled after a rushing loss and two more pass plays. On fourth-and-13 from the Tampa Bay 39, Andrew Van Ginkel intercepted Mayfield's pass intended for Gainwell. Mayfield was injured on the play, which ended with 1:39 remaining; Todd Bowles later described the injury as a dislocated thumb. Mayfield finished 17-for-34 for 217 yards, one touchdown and one interception, with six sacks costing 31 yards.

Minnesota used a 12-yard Jones reception and three rushing plays to set up Reichard's 43-yard field goal with 33 seconds remaining. Daniels entered for his NFL debut with Tampa Bay trailing by seven. A replay changed his scramble from a ten-yard first down to a nine-yard gain, and the Bucs were unable to move the chains. Isaiah Rodgers intercepted Daniels' final deep pass at the Minnesota three as time expired. Daniels finished without a completion in three attempts, with one interception and nine rushing yards.

Egbuka led Tampa Bay with five receptions for 62 yards, Otton added three for 56, and Irving rushed 15 times for 46 yards. Murray completed 15 of 29 passes for 168 yards, one touchdown and one interception; Addison supplied five catches for 90 yards and the Vikings' only offensive touchdown. Minnesota never reached the red zone, while Tampa Bay finished without a touchdown in two red-zone trips. Alex Anzalone, Walker and Anthony Nelson each recorded a sack for the Bucs, but Price's return score and Minnesota's late stops helped the Vikings improve to 3-0.
