WEEK 1 RECAP: FOUR LOST FUMBLES UNDERCUT TAMPA BAY'S SEASON OPENER, DESPITE A THIRD-QUARTER PICK-SIX AND A LATE TOUCHDOWN DRIVE.

Tampa Bay opened the 2026 regular season with a 33-27 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals at Paycor Stadium on Sunday, September 13. The Buccaneers scored on the opening possession and later fought their way back within a touchdown, but four lost fumbles kept handing Cincinnati opportunities. The Bengals turned those takeaways into 24 points and held the ball for the final 3:19 to close out the game.

Baker Mayfield completed 23 of 28 passes for 216 yards without an interception and added a rushing touchdown, but he lost three fumbles. Bucky Irving supplied 93 yards from scrimmage and a touchdown while losing the fourth fumble. Rookie linebacker Josiah Trotter gave Tampa Bay its biggest defensive spark with a 38-yard interception return for a touchdown, a sack and a team-high 10 tackles. Cincinnati countered with Joe Burrow's 254 passing yards and four field goals from Evan McPherson.

The afternoon began with an encouraging Tampa Bay drive. After winning the coin toss and choosing to receive, the Bucs moved from their own 28 to the Cincinnati 16. Emeka Egbuka converted an early third down with a 17-yard catch, and Chris Godwin Jr. added another third-down conversion. Chase McLaughlin's 34-yard field goal finished an 11-play, 56-yard drive and gave Tampa Bay a 3-0 lead with 9:09 left in the first quarter. The defense then forced a three-and-out, and Tez Johnson's 13-yard punt return put the offense back on the field.

The game changed on Tampa Bay's next three possessions. Myles Murphy and Barrett Carter combined on a third-down sack, Murphy forced the ball loose, and Demetrius Knight Jr. returned the fumble 27 yards for a touchdown. On the next Bucs drive, Bryan Cook stripped Irving after a catch and Boye Mafe recovered at Tampa Bay's 33. Seven plays later, Burrow found Mike Gesicki for a two-yard touchdown, making the score 14-3 with 1:48 remaining in the opening quarter.

Tampa Bay's next possession crossed into Cincinnati territory and reached the Bengals' 12, but another turnover ended a scoring opportunity. Mayfield scrambled to the four before Carter forced a fumble, and Cook recovered in the end zone for a touchback. Cincinnati followed with a 12-play, 80-yard touchdown drive. Chase Brown's five-yard run and McPherson's extra point extended the lead to 21-3 with 5:32 left in the second quarter.

The Bucs responded with a six-play, 75-yard drive. Godwin's 30-yard reception on third-and-three was the biggest gain, and Irving finished the possession with a 10-yard touchdown run at 1:49. Cincinnati still had time to answer. Gesicki caught three passes for 52 yards on the ensuing drive, which ended in McPherson's 20-yard field goal with six seconds remaining. Tampa Bay went to halftime trailing 24-10.

McPherson opened the second-half scoring with a 55-yard field goal, pushing Cincinnati's advantage to 27-10. Tampa Bay answered with a 10-play possession that included Irving's 22-yard catch on third down. Jonathan Allen's sack forced the Bucs to settle for McLaughlin's 51-yard field goal at 3:41. The defense then delivered a quick change of momentum: Trotter intercepted Burrow's pass intended for Andrei Iosivas and returned it 38 yards for a touchdown. With 2:16 left in the third quarter, the Bucs were within seven at 27-20.

Cincinnati restored a two-score lead on its next possession. Tampa Bay successfully challenged a Tee Higgins reception, but Burrow converted a later third-and-10 with a 24-yard pass to Gesicki. The drive crossed into the fourth quarter before McPherson made a 58-yard field goal with 14:04 remaining. On Tampa Bay's next series, Mafe sacked Mayfield and forced another fumble, recovered by T.J. Slaton Jr. The Bengals used that possession to add McPherson's 32-yard field goal, making it 33-20 at 5:19.

Josh Williams' 47-yard kickoff return gave Tampa Bay a chance to answer quickly. Ted Hurst III caught three passes for 36 yards on the resulting drive, and Mayfield scrambled for a nine-yard touchdown with 3:19 left. McLaughlin's extra point cut the deficit to 33-27. The Buccaneers needed one more defensive stop, but Cincinnati moved the chains with completions to Dohnte Meyers, Samaje Perine and Higgins. Burrow's third-and-one run earned the final first down, and his kneel-down ended the game.

Egbuka led Tampa Bay with 63 receiving yards on five catches. Irving rushed eight times for 45 yards and caught all seven of his targets for 48 more. Trotter's defensive performance included the Bucs' only sack, while Zyon McCollum and Antoine Winfield Jr. each recorded nine tackles. The Buccaneers did not punt; apart from the brief possession before halftime, every Tampa Bay drive ended with points or a lost fumble.

Burrow finished 25-for-35 with one touchdown and one interception. Gesicki led Cincinnati with five catches for 78 yards and a score, and Brown added 56 rushing yards and a touchdown. The Bengals outgained Tampa Bay 351-282, converted eight of 14 third downs and held a 31:25 to 28:35 advantage in possession. Both teams scored three touchdowns, but Cincinnati's two additional field goals supplied the six-point margin. The result left the Buccaneers 0-1 and the Bengals 1-0.
