The 49ers were able to move the ball easily against the injury-riddled Buccaneer defense. Six defensive starters missed the game. By the end of the day, the only regular defensive starter still on the field was Ed Judie, who was not with the team at the beginning of the season.

The Tampa Bay defense was able to hold Joe Montana to no touchdowns passing, but he scored on a 12-yard run, while Roger Craig ran for three touchdowns.

The 49ers had their highest rushing total since 1978, with 227 yards. Jack Thompson threw for 337 yards and three touchdowns, with Kevin House accounting for 156 yards and a touchdown on six receptions.
